ECsafeSEAFOOD assessed food safety issues related to priority contaminants present in seafood as a result of environmental contamination (including those originating from harmful algal blooms and those associated with marine litter) and evaluate their impact on public health. ECsafeSEAFOOD directly addressed several aspects of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), supported the provision of safe seafood to consumers and reduced human health risks.

The ECsafeSEAFOOD project has produced a number of important outputs, including new and effective tools to perform more effective seafood risk analysis and more accurate risk assessments, fast screening detection methods for seafood contaminants, the ECsafeSEAFOOD database for priority chemical compounds, a unique database in which data on contaminants of emerging concern in seafood species are collated and FishChoice, an online tool which allows consumers to assess the health benefits and risks of seafood.

ECsafeSEAFOOD has also published three safe seafood guides to help consumers, industry stakeholders and policymakers understand the benefits and risks associated with seafood consumption. Each guide includes recommendations to help reduce possible risks of seafood contamination from the specific stakeholder’s perspective.
